This Deep Dive Study Group will review approaches to assessments, a variety of strength-based criterion reference and observational checklists for young autistic preschool aged children clinicians can use in school-based or clinical settings.

Janine Benner received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from California State University Long Beach. She has been a practicing speech-language pathologist for 31 years, with the last 23 years working in pediatrics. Janine recently received board certification in Child Language with the American Board of Child Language and Language Disorders (ABCLLD). Janine is a school-based speech-language pathologist and works with preschool and elementary students. Before working in the public schools, Janine was an Assistant Professor and Assistant Clinical Coordinator at Loma Linda University in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. She developed and taught undergraduate courses in autism spectrum disorders, language disorders in children, a graduate-level Issues in Public School Speech Pathology course, and an SLPD course in neurodiversity. Janine was also a faculty supervisor for two of the department’s pediatric clinics, autism and early intervention. Janine utilizes strength-based and evidence-based approaches to assess and treat young children with complex language disorders. Janine uses naturalistic, developmental, parent-mediated, child-led, play-based treatment models and coaching strategies. She is passionate about whole-person care, service, mentoring, and teaching.


Deep Dive Study Group: Refresh Your SLP Toolbox: Assessment and Treatment Approaches for Young Autistic Learners

Description: This group/course will review approaches to assessments, a variety of strength-based criterion reference and observational checklists for young autistic preschool aged children clinicians can use in school-based or clinical settings. It will cover approaches for choosing and writing goals, identification and demonstration of evidenced-based naturalistic strength-based, relationship-based approaches to treatment and treatment ideas and activities, and methods to monitor progress and provide effective parent coaching strategies. Mentees will practice observational  and clinical description skills for reports and documentation and develop tools for their clinical toolbox with regard to assessment and planning treatment activities. Mentees will also apply skills learning in course to current cases and then mentor will provide feedback during discussions and Q & A time.

  • Each session will begin with a mentor presentation followed by a group discussion of case studies and applications.
  • Bring specific case studies to be discussed.
  • Discussion group available during the week for your cohort on The SLP Hub community forum.
  • Post-group access to the private mentor group discussion forum.
  • Pre-requisite courses assigned by the mentor may be required.
  • Sessions will be recorded for future reference and in case of a missed session.
  • Sessions are offered for ASHA CEUs (must attend live).
